Luna: the upholstery fabric that survives a child's room

The upholstery fabric is the one part of a bed you touch every day. It decides how the bed looks after five years – not how it looks in the photo on delivery day. Here is everything you need to know about Luna before you pick a shade.

What Luna actually is

Luna is a single-colour fabric made from 100% polyester in a plain weave – the simplest and at the same time the strongest weave a textile can have. It has no pile. The surface is therefore matt, dry to the touch and lightly textured, similar to a firm canvas or a coarser linen.

That gives it the biggest practical difference from velour fabrics: Luna has no shading effect. Run your hand over it or sit down on the bed and you leave no lighter patch behind that you would have to smooth out. In a room where the bed is used during the day as well, you notice it.

Non-woven backing – and why it matters

The reverse side of Luna is backed with non-woven fabric. It sounds like a detail for the upholsterer, but the customer sees it on the finished bed: a backed fabric holds its shape. It does not stretch where it is pulled over an edge, seams stay straight, and buttoned tufting – on the York headboard, for instance – does not start to sag after a year.

The second point is fabric weight. 493 g/m² is an above-average figure; Luna is noticeably firmer and heavier than ordinary upholstery fabrics. That is exactly why it suits the large upholstered surfaces of bed headboards, where every imperfection in the tension shows.

Abrasion resistance: what Martindale means

Martindale is a laboratory test in which a fabric sample is rubbed against a standardised abrasive until it is damaged. The resulting number is how many cycles the fabric withstood. On its own it says nothing – it only makes sense in comparison.

Luna sits at roughly twice what hotel use normally demands. A bed also does not wear the way a sofa does, where people sit down on the same spot every day – you rarely touch the upholstered parts of a bed with any force. In practice it means everything else will wear out before the fabric does, children and pets included.

24 shades of Luna

Shades on a monitor always differ a little from the real fabric – it depends on how your display is calibrated and on the light in your room. Treat the overview below as a guide only – you will see the real fabric in the showroom.

Light and natural tones (1, 21, 31, 33)

Cream, sand and grey-green shades make a smaller room look bigger and reflect light. They do show more dust, so expect to vacuum a little more often. Of the whole palette these suit a child's room with a large window best.

Earthy tones (8, 14, 17, 27)

The browns and the olive suit interiors with wood and hide everyday wear best. If you are not sure whether you will still want the bed in five years, this is the safest group.

Blue and wine tones (16, 24, 30, 60, 78, 85)

Petrol and deep blue feel cooler and calmer; the wine and purple shades turn the headboard into the main colour statement in the room. With strong colours, remember that a large upholstered surface always looks more saturated than a palm-sized sample.

Grey and dark tones (12, 15, 29, 32, 34, 35, 36, 41, 65, 96)

The largest and most versatile group. Anthracite and graphite are the most common choice for guesthouses and rentals – they look new the longest and match anything.

How to care for Luna

What to do

• Vacuum once a month with a soft attachment. Settled dust is the main reason a plain weave looks darker after a few years than it once did.
• Blot spilled liquid immediately with a paper towel – press, do not rub – then wipe the rest with a slightly damp cloth.
• Use products intended for upholstered furniture, and test any new product on a hidden spot first.

What to avoid

• Large amounts of water – moisture gets below the surface and leaves a ring once it dries.
• Bleach and aggressive cleaners.
• Scrubbing in circles. Always clean in one direction, from the edge of the stain towards the centre.

Luna, or another fabric?
